Savor the tea's delicate flavor while enjoying panoramic vistas of the bay, preparing your mind for a serene state of contemplation. This tea house offers a glimpse into Japan's refined aesthetic and spiritual traditions, inviting visitors to embrace the beauty of stillness.
Godaido Temple
Godaido Temple, perched on a small island just off the coast of Matsushima, is an iconic symbol of this celebrated scenic spot. Its vibrant vermillion facade stands in striking contrast to the deep blue of the bay and the lush green pines that dot the surrounding islands. Originally built in 807, the current structure dates back to 1604 and houses statues of the Five Great Wisdom Kings (Godaido), protectors of Buddhism. This small but significant temple offers not only spiritual solace but also breathtaking photo opportunities.
Zuiganji Temple
Delve into Zen Buddhism at Zuiganji Temple, one of the Tohoku region's most revered Zen temples. Founded in 828, this historic temple, rebuilt in 1609 by Date Masamune, showcases exquisite Momoyama-style architecture and tranquil gardens. Join an English-speaking Buddhist priest for a guided tour, accessing exclusive rooms typically closed to the public. Pay homage to Date Mitsumune, a young samurai heir, at Entsu-in Temple, nestled along Matsushima's waterfront. This temple is renowned for its exquisite moss gardens and a captivating rock garden that depicts the islands of Matsushima Bay, offering a serene and contemplative atmosphere. Dedicated to Mitsumune, who tragically passed away at age 19, the temple's romantic and somewhat melancholic ambiance makes it a compelling stop for those seeking beauty and reflection.
