The Journey
Basilica Cistern

This vast underground chamber, one of over sixty cisterns beneath Istanbul, was designed to store water for the Great Palace and surrounding areas. Marvel at the forest of marble columns rising from the water, illuminated to showcase their intricate carvings. Seek out the Medusa heads, repurposed as column bases, their origins shrouded in myth and their presence adding an air of mystery to this remarkable feat of Byzantine engineering. A visit here offers a glimpse into the resourcefulness and artistry of ancient Constantinople.
