Descend into Rochmenier, a fascinating troglodyte village where history is literally etched in stone. Wander through a network of 250 underground rooms, ingeniously carved out of the region's soft sandstone over centuries. The village, nestled across approximately 40 farms, tells a story of resourceful adaptation and community growth from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Explore two meticulously preserved farmsteads, abandoned in the early 20th century and opened to the public in 1967, offering an intimate glimpse into the daily lives of the last inhabitants. See their furniture, tools, and photographs, all testaments to a bygone era. Notably, the sandstone walls are composed of calcareous sand containing seashells, a material once crucial for local farmers to neutralize soil acidity, adding a unique geological dimension to your historical exploration.
