The Journey
Dealey Plaza
Experience the location where, just after noon, the presidential motorcade made its way, greeted by cheering crowds. Imagine the scene as President Kennedy waved to onlookers, with Jackie Kennedy observing the surrounding trees. Picture the Lincoln Continental passing a group of high school students releasing a shower of white confetti, symbolizing the optimism and excitement of that day, forever frozen in time before the tragic events unfolded moments later. Visit the JFK Memorial and the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, housed in the former Texas School Book Depository, to explore exhibits detailing Kennedy's life, presidency, and the circumstances surrounding his assassination.
Dallas Morning News Building (Former Location)
Step back in time to November 1963, when President Kennedy, amidst political tensions in Texas, expressed concerns about his reception in Dallas. On the morning of his visit, he observed a large anti-Kennedy advertisement in the Dallas Morning News, prompting him to remark to Jackie, "You know, we’re heading into not country today." Although the location has changed since then, reflecting on this moment provides insight into the apprehension Kennedy felt before the motorcade began. Visit the current Dallas Morning News headquarters and reflect on the historical significance of this premonition.
Texas Democratic Political Landscape (1963)
Delve into the political climate of Texas in 1963, a crucial factor in JFK's decision to visit the state. Understanding the squabbling within the Texas Democratic party highlights the political importance of Texas for the upcoming 1964 election. Kennedy hoped that his trip could smooth tensions and solidify support. Moreover, the trip offered a welcome escape from the chilly Washington weather. Consider visiting the Dallas County Democratic Party headquarters to learn more about the political landscape of the era.
Parkland Memorial Hospital (Trauma Room One)
Reflect on the somber events that unfolded at Parkland Memorial Hospital. At 12:38 PM, minutes after the shots were fired, the motorcade urgently arrived at Parkland. Secret Service agents and hospital staff rushed President Kennedy into Trauma Room One. Picture the scene as a young surgeon, Dr. Malcolm Perry, began operating, struck by the profound realization that he was attending to 'the most important man in the world'. Though Trauma Room One no longer exists, visiting Parkland Memorial Hospital serves as a poignant reminder of the desperate efforts to save the President's life and the profound impact his death had on the nation.
