The Journey
La Baita
La Baita, your starting point at 1900 meters, serves as a gateway to the volcanic wonders of Mount Etna. Nestled on the southern slopes, this location offers immediate access to the lava fields formed during the early 2000s eruptions. As a convenient staging area for explorations, La Baita provides stunning initial views of the volcanic landscape and sets the stage for an immersive Etna adventure.
Lava Flows (2001-2003)
Witness the raw power of Mount Etna's recent eruptions as you traverse the extensive lava flows from 2001, 2002, and 2003. These flows dramatically reshaped the landscape, destroying tourist infrastructure and threatening nearby towns like Nicolosi. Walking across this solidified magma is a stark reminder of Etna's volatile nature and the constant battle between nature's destructive force and human resilience. The stark, almost lunar landscape offers unique photo opportunities and a profound sense of geological history.
The Abyss (Ice Cave)
Discover 'The Abyss,' a fascinating ice cave where locals once preserved snow for use during the warmer months. This natural refrigerator provides a glimpse into the ingenuity of past generations and their adaptation to the challenging environment of Mount Etna. The cave offers a cool respite and a unique insight into the cultural history intertwined with the volcano's natural features.
Button Craters
Ascend to 2100 meters to marvel at the 'Button Craters', named for their distinctive morphology resembling buttons scattered across the landscape. These craters, formed during recent eruptions, are a testament to Etna's ongoing geological activity. The lavas here contain inclusions of sedimentary rocks, adding to their geological intrigue. The panoramic views from the Button Craters are breathtaking, encompassing the Ionian Coast and the surrounding volcanic terrain, creating an unforgettable vista.
